What to Pack for a Safari: A Checklist

Going on a safari? Here’s a list of what you should pack! This list is made for a 7-day trip. 

Clothes:

  • 4x t-shirts
  • 2x sweaters
  • 3x shorts
  • 2x pants
  • 7x underwear
  • 7x socks
  • 1x rain jacket
  • 1x wide-brim hat
  • 1x sunglasses 
  • 1x sneakers
  • 1x hiking boots or running shoes
  • 1x flip flops (optional)
  • 1x bathing suit (optional)
  • 1x fitness clothes (optional)

Non-clothes

  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Toiletries (make sure your shower products are biodegradable, for example, EarthSuds)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Book
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Passport
  • Boarding pass
  • Country-specific visa(s)
  • Phone
  • Phone charger and adaptor
  • Medication (e.g., malaria pills)
  • Eye mask and earplugs (optional)
  • Snacks (optional)

Notes:

  • No suitcases with wheels. Bring a soft cover hiking backpack.
  • No bright colored clothes. Pack clothes that are tan, green, brown, grey, etc. to blend in to the surrounding environment.
  • Pack light. You don’t want to lug around a heavy bag. There are also weight restrictions on local flights.
  • Include warm clothes. Safari game drives can start at 6am and it’s cool in the mornings.
  • Bring excellent binoculars. Much better to bring a larger pair with strong zoom-in capabilities than a smaller pair to save space.
