What are TSA guidelines for Shampoo?

Zero-waste travel toiletries restrictions of what liquids can be included in your carry-on luggage, sustainable shampoo, conditioner, and body wash for travel.

Airport security guidelines can be stressful and confusing. At one airport, you may be required to take off your shoes, whereas at another you can leave your shoes on but you have to take off your jacket. The guidelines for bringing traditional shampoo and other liquids through airport security can seem even more complicated.

This article will lay out the requirements provided by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the US for what liquids you can pack in your carry-on luggage. There are 3 main considerations:

  1. Individual bottle size: Each liquid bottle must be 100 milliliters (3.4 oz) or less. Some airports will let you bring a larger container (e.g., 150mL of toothpaste) that has been squeezed down below 100mL, but it depends how obvious it is that it's below 100mL.

  2. Total size of all bottles: Everything must fit into a quart-sized bag... but what in the world are the dimensions of a quart-sized bag? It means all your bottles must fit in a 6 inch by 9 inch bag, and you must not have more than 1L of liquids (e.g., 10 bottles @ 100mL each).

  3. Exceptions: For products related to medical conditions and/or childcare (e.g., baby formula), there are exceptions. However, those items must be screened separately.
